Scholarships for Women
Here are some of the scholarships for women on our site for which you may qualify.
American Dissertation Fellowships
Dissertation Fellowships offset a scholar’s living expenses while she completes her dissertation. The fellowship must be used for the final year of writing the dissertation. Applicants must have completed all course work, passed all preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposals or plans by the preceding November. Students holding fellowships for writing a dissertation in the year prior to the AAUW fellowships year are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study. Scholars engaged in science, technology, engineering, and math fields or researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply.
Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grants
Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grants fund women college and university faculty and independent researchers to prepare research for publication. Applicants may be tenure track, part time, or temporary faculty or may be independent researchers and scholars, either new or established. Time must be available for eight weeks of final writing, editing, and responding to issues raised in critical reviews. These grants can be awarded to both tenure-track and part-time faculty, and new and established researchers. The grants are designed to assist the candidate in obtaining tenure and other promotions. Tenured professors are not eligible.
WOSL Scholarship Awards
Scholarship awards are based upon the decisions of the Scholarship Committee of the Women's Overseas Service League Board of Directors. Scholarships average $500.00 to $1000.00 annually and may be renewed for a second year if the recipient maintains and reports satisfactory progress as delineated in the scholarship award criteria.
Scholarship awards may be granted to women who
Are committed to advancement in military or other public service careers.
Have demonstrated such commitment through life experiences.
Have successfully completed a minimum of 12 semester (or 18 quarter) hours of study in any institution of higher education with a minimum 2.5 grade point average.
Are admitted for study in an institution of higher learning in a program leading to an academic degree (Associate Degree or higher). The program may be professional or technical in nature.
Agree to enroll for a minimum of six semester (or nine quarter) hours of study each academic period.
Agree to maintain academic standards.
Applicants must complete the Scholarship Application form in its entirety and include all documentation, including resume, transcripts, essays and references as specified on the application form.
Gladys C. Anderson Memorial Scholarship
Provided to a WOMAN who is legally blind, studying religious or classical music at the college level. To be eligible the applicant must be a United States citizen, and submit: 1. Evidence of legal blindness 2. Official transcript(s) of grades 3. Proof of acceptance at a college or university 4. Three letters of recommendation 5. A sample performance tape of voice or instrumental selection (not to exceed 30 minutes) 6. A typewritten statement of no more than three double-spaced pages describing educational and personal goals, work experience, extra-curricular activities, and how scholarship monies will be used.
R.L. Gillette Scholarship
Offered to WOMEN who are legally blind and enrolled in a four-year undergraduate degree program in literature or music. To be eligible, the applicant must be a United States citizen, and submit: 1. Evidence of legal blindness 2. Official transcript(s) of grades 3. Proof of acceptance at a college or university 4. Three letters of recommendation 5. A sample performance tape (not to exceed 30 minutes) or a creative writing sample 6. A typewritten statement of no more than three double-spaced pages describing educational and personal goals, work experience, extra-curricular activities, and how scholarship monies will be used.
Dr. Vicki L. Schechtman Scholarship
AWIS offers undergraduate women the opportunity to apply for the Dr. Vicki L. Schechtman Scholarship. The Schechtman Scholarship awards $1,000 to an undergraduate woman interested in pursuing a career in scientific studies. Preference is given to applicants who wish to pursue research. Any female student matriculating at a college or university, who meets the qualifications, is eligible to apply. Entering and current freshmen are especially encouraged to apply. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and hold United States citizenship. Chosen field of study must be recognized by the National Science Foundation. Restrictions are subject to change. This scholarship awards $1,000 to an undergraduate woman interested in pursuing a career in scientific studies. Applicants must be high school seniors or college freshmen, enrolled at a U.S. institution, have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 and studying in the life or physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, computer and information sciences, or psychology. The award can be used for any aspect of education.
Amelia Earhart Fellowship
FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION
Established in 1938 in honor of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, the Amelia Earhart Fellowship is awarded annually to women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering. The Fellowship of US$10,000, awarded to 35 Fellows around the globe each year, may be used at any university or college offering accredited post-graduate courses and degrees in these fields.
ELIGIBILITY
Women of any nationality pursuing a Ph.D./doctoral degree who demonstrate a superior academic record in the field of aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering are eligible. Please note that post-doctoral research programs are not eligible for the Fellowship. Members and employees of Zonta International or the Zonta International Foundation are also not eligible to apply for the Fellowship. Current fellows may apply to renew the Fellowship for a second year and will undergo the same application and evaluation procedures as first-time applicants. Applicants must be registered in a full-time Ph.D./doctoral program when funds are received in September and will not graduate before April.
APPLICATION PROCESS
The Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Committee reviews the applications and recommends recipients to the Zonta International Board of Directors. All applicants will be notified of their status by the end of April.
Betty Shanahan Scholarship
The SWE Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science.
A one-time only graduate student scholarship to recognize SWE's Executive Director & CEO Betty Shanahan's outstanding accomplishment over 10 year's of service. SWE membership required. Amount: TBD

GE's Women's Network Scholarship
US Citizenship & SWE membership required. Leadership roles outside of academics and involvement in engineering professional organizations, discipline related internships, presentation skills. Recipients willing to intern at GE. 20 @ $5,000.

Admiral Grace Murray Hopper Scholarships
Preference is given to students in computer related engineering majors. 3 @ $1,500

Anne Maureen Whitney Barrow Memorial Scholarship
Awarded once per renewal cycle. 1 @ $7,000 Renewable 5 yr. max.
Open to Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior, Senior students. All Engineering majors.

U.S. citizenship required; disabled, military veteran/ROTC program preferred. Preferred list of schools include: University of Puerto Rico, Cornell, Penn State, Rutgers-New Brunswick, University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, University of Southern California, University of South Florida, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Purdue, CUNY-City College, Villanova. 10 @ $3,000.
