Physically Disabled Scholarships

Here are some of the Physically Disabled scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.

Mary Serra Gili Scholarship Award

A $250.00 scholarship will be awarded to a nursing student with a disability. This scholarship has been donated by Thomas Gili. Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be students with a documented disability who have applied to, or already been admitted to, a college or university program on a full-time basis.

Genevieve Saran Richmond Award

A $500.00 scholarship will be awarded to a nursing student with a disability. This scholarship has been donated by Leslie and Virginia Fiur. Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be students with a documented disability who have applied to, or already been admitted to, a college or university program on a full-time basis.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE TUITION WAIVER FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES RECEIVING SSI OR SSDI

Who may apply: Students receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. How to apply: Complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov. For State aid consideration, complete and submit the FAFSA by March 1 each year. Contact the financial aid office of the community college you will attend to have the waiver activated. Eligible programs or courses: Degree or Certificate programs designed to lead to employment, and continuing education instruction designed to lead to employment, including life skills instruction. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Any student receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits is eligible to apply for this waiver. You must provide proof from the Social Security Administration (SSA) of receiving SSI or SSDI benefits. WAIVER AMOUNT You are exempt from paying tuition at community colleges in Maryland for up to 12 credits per semester if you are taking classes as part of a degree or a certificate program designed to lead to employment. The waiver is limited to 6 credits if you are enrolled in community college credit courses for any other reason. A course must have at least 10 enrolled students for the waiver to apply. The tuition waiver applies to any balance on tuition after any grants and scholarships you receive have been applied to your tuition and fees. You are responsible for all other costs associated with the courses, such as books.

Sweeney Family Scholarship

The "Sweeney Family Scholarship" is awarded annually, and provides assistance to individuals with disabilities so they can pursue educational goals or gain technical expertise beyond high school to increase their career options and enrich their lives through education and training. This scholarship is for any student pursuing an education in a restaurant, foodservice, or hospitality related major. Who Can Apply: Students with disabilities.

C. Bainbridge Smith Scholarship

The C. Bainbridge Smith Scholarship Committee provides scholarships to second and third year inner-city law students who have spent a significant portion of their lives in New York City, demonstrate character, intelligence and promising aptitude for the law, and face a special economic disadvantage (including lack of funds, or physical or cultural handicaps).

Disabled Pilot International Scholarship

This scholarship is being sponsored by a team including disabled pilots and is open to a deserving person, female or male, aged 18 or older wanting to obtain a sport pilot or private pilot certificate. Include in your essay why you would like to learn to fly and how this scholarship might assist you in achieving your dream of flight. In addition to WAI requirements: 1. Provide a copy of a valid and current state driver's license (serves as the medical certificate for sport pilot) or a third class medical certificate if pursuing a private pilot certificate. 2. Provide a simple statement from a physician as to the nature of the applicant's physical disability. No medical records are to be submitted. Funds to be paid direct to the flight school. (Scholarship value $1,500) Submission Requirements: Applicants must be a member of Women in Aviation, International and may apply for no more than two scholarships. Internships are not included in the two per member scholarship limit. All application materials can be submitted in the same envelope. These requirements are the minimum for all scholarships unless otherwise indicated. Some scholarships may require additional information, please read the description thoroughly to make sure you meet all requirements. For each scholarship include three stapled (no folders) complete application sets (one original and two copies) of the following information: Official WAI application form Two one-page recommendation letters (originals - no photocopies) Typed, descriptive 500-word essay Professional résumé Copies of all aviation and medical certificates and the last three pages of your pilot logbook (if applicable)

ALA Century Scholarship

An annual scholarship of $2,500 that funds services or accommodation for a library school student(s) with disabilities admitted to an ALA-accredited library school. The scholarship will fund services or accommodations that are either not provided by law or otherwise by the university that will enable the student or students to successfully complete the course of study for a Master’s in Library Science and become a library or information studies professional. Formerly administered by ASCLA. The Century Scholarship is currently being administered by the ALA HRDR office. Century Scholarship applicants must provide medical documentation of their disability or disabilities, services, or accommodations and/or services the applicant would need for their studies, demonstrate the need for financial assistance and be citizens of the United States or Canada. Documentation should identify the applicant's disability and how it affects his or her ability to complete a course of study. Any additional supporting documents are welcome. Documentation is only used to determine eligibility for the scholarship, and will remain confidential.
