Scholarship Description
The scholarship competition is open to American citizens and permanent residents between the ages of 18 and 30 who are beginning their professional careers. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in New York auditions to be held February 28th, 2011 at the Kaufman Center in NYC. Transportation to and from New York is at the candidate’s own expense. There is a non-refundable application fee of $40.The scholarship recipients will travel to Berlin to start his or her training with the Deutsche Oper Berlin or Teatro Regio Torino. The term of residence is typically 10 months from September through June, but can vary according to the respective schedules of the individual opera company. Each winner receives a full time contract with the opera house for the duration of their scholarship. Each scholarship includes a stipend in the amount of approximately US$16,000 and a round-trip flight to Berlin or Turin, a $1,300 value. The Berlin scholarship includes a €700 per month from Deutsche Oper Berlin to cover housing and healthcare benefits. Teatro Regio di Torino facilitates free housing in Torino and includes a €300 monthly payment and a meal subsidy plan.During the year, the students receive advanced training and are offered roles in actual productions for which they may receive additional compensation. The Opera Foundation facilitates housing in Berlin and recipients are encouraged to participate in language courses in both Turin and Berlin. The scholarship competition is currently only open to American citizens or permanent resident card holders, between the ages of 18 and 30 who are beginning their professional singing careers.
