Scholarship Description
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance and work experience to African Americans interested in theological education within the Episcopal Church in the United States of America (ECUSA). Applicants must be African Americans who are postulants and candidates for holy orders, canonically resident in one of the nine provinces of ECUSA, and attending one of the Churchs accredited seminaries. Selection is based on participation in the Organization of Black Episcopal Seminarians Conferences (OBES), academic achievement, involvement in the Retention, Training and Deployment (RT&D) programs, and service to the Black community. The maximum scholarship stipend is $5,000. Funding up to $2,500 is available for the Seminarian Summer Internship. These scholarships are offered as part of the RT&D program, which involves 3 components: 1) recruitment, which helps to identify Black Episcopalians as aspirants for Holy Orders and advise them of the availability of these scholarships; 2) training, which is comprised of the OBES, a mentoring program, and the Black Seminarian Summer Internship; and 3) deployment, which assists the newly ordained persons in fulfilling their call to ministry.
