Social Sciences Scholarships

Sociology scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen students in Sociology or Social Work.

Available to students majoring in English, Sociology and Social Work or Business Management. Must be a citizen of the U.S. and have high academic standing.

Eligibility:Applicants should: * Be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada; * Have completed all academic requirements for the Ph.D., except dissertation, by the date of application; * Demonstrate significant course work in Jewish studies at the graduate level; * Provide evidence of proficiency in a Jewish language (i.e. Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, Aramaic, etc.); * Be in a reasonable position to complete the work of their thesis during their fellowship year ; * Have a proposal or prospectus that has been approved by a thesis committee; * Complete online application in full. Partially completed applications cannot accepted. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that applications are complete by the deadline. A strong preference is given to individuals preparing for academic careers in Jewish studies, and to those who indicate that they will pursue a career in the United States Although occasional grants are awarded to students in other fields of the humanities or social sciences who demonstrate a career commitment to Jewish scholarship. To enable recipients to devote themselves fully to completing the dissertation, it is expected that they will not hold a full-time job or equivalent academic workload during the fellowship year. We request that grantees inform us of any other fellowships or grants they may receive during their fellowship year.Fellowships cannot be postponed or deferred to another year. This award is given to a graduate student conducting a dissertation in the area of psychosocial oncology or other life threatening diseases and their related psychological psychosocial interventions. To be eligible, you must have an approved research topic, complete the application form, and submit a one-page abstract of the research project. The abstract should indicate that the student has obtained approval for the dissertation proposal.

Open to undergraduate students already enrolled at the University of San Diego, UC San Diego, or San Diego State University with a minimum 2.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale and a demonstrated financial need. Applicants must be planning to study abroad for a minimum of one semester in a Second or Third World Country whose culture, language and customs are different than their own. Preference is given to students who are interested in studying in fields such as, but not limited to, international relations, business, economics, social development, humanitarian & civil rights, foreign languages, or other similar fields. Scholarships are also offered to foreign students who have come to one of the above named universities from developing nations in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

The purpose of the Allied Healthcare Scholarship Program is to increase the number of appropriately trained allied healthcare professionals, and to encourage their practice in direct patient care in medically underserved areas of California. Priority is given to students enrolled in the fields of medical imaging, occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory care, social work, pharmacy, pharmacy technician, medical laboratory technologist, surgical technician, ultrasound technician, and diagnostic medical sonography. Eligible applicants may receive up to $2,500 per year, and would have a service obligation of 1 year or 100-150 hours volunteer service. This program is funded by a contribution from Kaiser Permanente.

This fellowship is for women of Native American heritage. While candidates for this award may be working in any graduate or pre-professional field, the particular goal of the Allen Fellowship is to encourage Native American women in their studies of the humanities and social sciences. Financial support varies according to need and may include travel expenses. Allen Fellows are expected to spend a significant part of their tenure in residence at the Newberry's D'Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History. The tenure of the fellowship is from one month to one year; the fellowship provides up to $8,000 in approved expenses. Please note: applicants for the Allen Fellowship must fill out a supplementary form in addition to the cover sheet for special awards and fellowships.

Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship For Minorities is a $17,000 stipend per year for 3 years. Open to individuals who are members of the following groups: Alaska Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Native American Indians, Black/African Americans, Puerto Ricans, Mexican Americans/Chicanas/Chicanos, and Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesian or Micronesian). Applicants must be registered full-time in a research-based doctoral program (Ph.D. or Sc.D.). Eligible fields include: Research-based areas of the social and behavioral sciences, education, engineering, humanities, life sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences.

In 2006, the Accenture American Indian College Fund will award five scholarships to undergraduates. These scholarships will meet a vital need for American Indians seeking higher education and having financial need. The program seeks to select the very brightest American Indian and Alaska Native students who are attaining a professional, teaching, social services, high technology or business degree. It is comprised of the following awards: Accenture Scholars Three $20,000 scholarships for students pursuing a four-year degree. Finalist Scholarships Two scholarships of $2,000 per year for four years. In addition to the scholarship funds, scholarship recipients in their junior year may be eligible for summer internships with Accenture. Eligibility: Candidates will have excelled academically and demonstrated leadership ability and commitment to community. Specific eligibility criteria are that the successful candidate: Be an enrolled member of a federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native Tribe and be able to demonstrate involvement with or measurable interests in Native American activities or affairs. Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the end of the seventh semester of secondary school. Will be entering a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking freshman. Have demonstrated character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is demonstrated through leadership in school, civic and extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed. The American Association of Japanese University Women (AAJUW) was founded to promote the education of women, as well as to contribute to U.S. - Japan relations, cultural exchanges, and development of leadership.
