7-12 Classroom Research Grants
The purpose of this grant is support and encourage classroom-based research in pre-college mathematics education in collaboration with college or university mathematics educators. Grants with a maximum of $6,000 each will be awarded to classroom teachers* currently teaching mathematics at the grades 7–12 level. The research must be a significant collaborative effort involving a college or university mathematics educator (a mathematics education researcher or a teacher of mathematics learning, teaching, or curriculum) and one or more grades 7–12 classroom teachers. The proposal may include, but is not restricted to, research on the following topics: * Curriculum development and implementation * Involvement of at-risk or minority students * Students’ thinking about a particular mathematics concept or set of concepts * Connection of mathematics to other disciplines * Focused learning and teaching of mathematics with embedded use of technology (any acquisition of equipment must support the proposed plan but not be the primary focus of the grant) * Innovative assessment or evaluation strategies(*The definition of a classroom teacher is an individual who spends half or more of his/her work time teaching in the classroom.)Involvement of preservice teachers is encouraged but not required. It is hoped that this research will lead to an article suitable for publication in the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education or in one of the NCTM school journals. Proposals must address the following: research design, the plan for collecting and analyzing data, and the anticipated impact on students’ learning.The applicant must be a current Full Individual or E-Member of NCTM or teach at a school having a current NCTM PreK-8 school membership. The college or university mathematics educator must be a member of the NCTM. No person(s) may receive more than one award administered by the Mathematics Education Trust in the same academic year. Past recipients of this grant are not eligible to reapply.
Summer Mathematics Study Grants for Grades 6-8 Teachers
The purpose of this grant is to provide financial support for teachers seeking to improve their understanding of mathematics by completing course work in mathematics content. Grants with a maximum of $6,000 each will be awarded to persons currently teaching at the grades 6-8 level. Primary emphasis is placed on enrollment and completion of appropriate courses on mathematics content and the relevance of the course content to enhancing the teaching of mathematics in Grades 6-8. Proposals must address the following: rationale for the coursework, anticipated instructional improvements, and the expected impact on student learning. The grant will advance funds to cover tuition, and books. The balance of the funds will be issued as a stipend upon receipt of an official transcript that demonstrates completion of the proposed mathematics course work with a grade of C or better.The applicant must be a current Full Individual or E-Member of NCTM or must teach at a school with a current NCTM PreK–8 school membership. The applicant must be presently teaching mathematics in grades 6-8 and intend to continue teaching in the next school year. No person(s) may receive more than one award administered by the Mathematics Education Trust in the same academic year. Past recipients of this grant are not eligible to reapply.
Connecting Mathematics to Other Subject Areas Grants for Grades 9–12 Teachers
The purpose of this grant is to create senior high classroom materials or lessons connecting mathematics to other fields. Grants with a maximum of $4,000 each will be awarded to persons currently teaching mathematics in grades 9–12. Materials may be in the form of books, visual displays, computer programs or displays, slide shows, videotapes, or other appropriate medium. The focus of these materials should be on showing the connectivity of mathematics to other fields or to the world around us. Any acquisition of equipment or payment of personal stipends must be critical to the grant proposal and may not be a major portion of the proposed budget. Any published sources must be documented. Proposals must address the following: the plan for developing and evaluating materials, the connectivity to other fields or disciplines, and anticipated impact on students’ learning.The applicant must be a current Full Individual or E-Member of NCTM and currently teach mathematics in grades 9–12 at least 50 percent of the school day. No person(s) may receive more than one award administered by the Mathematics Education Trust in the same academic year. Past recipients of this grant are not eligible to reapply.
Teacher Professional Development Grants for Grades 9-12 Teachers
The purpose of this grant is to support professional development to improve the competence in the teaching of mathematics of one or more classroom teachers*. Grants of a maximum of $3,000 will be awarded to person(s) currently teaching at the grades 9–12 level. The proposal must delineate the teacher(s)' professional development plan and address how the proposed project will improve the teacher(s)’ competence and impact students’ learning. Any acquisition of equipment must support the proposed plan but not be the primary focus of the grant. Recipients must have three or more years of teaching experience in grades 9–12. Proposals must address the following: the professional development plan, how it will enhance the applicant(s)’ mathematical knowledge, and the anticipated impact on students’ learning. (*The definition of a classroom teacher is an individual who spends half or more of his/her work time teaching in the classroom.)The applicant must be a current Full Individual or E-Member of NCTM and currently teach mathematics in grades 9–12 at least 50 percent of the school day. No person(s) may receive more than one award administered by the Mathematics Education Trust in the same academic year. Past recipients of this grant are not eligible to reapply.
Mathematics Graduate Course Work Scholarships for Grades 9–12 Teachers
The purpose of this grant is to provide financial support for improving teachers’ understanding of mathematics by completing graduate course work in mathematics. Scholarships with a maximum of $2,000 each will be awarded to persons currently teaching at the grades 9–12 level. Primary emphasis is placed on appropriate mathematics content courses. Mathematics education courses may also qualify if a suitable rationale is provided by the applicant. Proposals must address the following: rationale for the coursework, anticipated instructional improvements, and expected impact on student learning outcomes.The applicant must (1) be a current Full Individual or E-Member of NCTM; (2) have taught school mathematics at least three years; and (3) intend to remain in teaching. No person(s) may receive more than one award administered by the Mathematics Education Trust in the same academic year. Past recipients of this scholarship are not eligible to reapply.
Prospective Middle School Mathematics Teacher Course Work Scholarships
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to college or university students preparing for teaching middle school mathematics. One scholarship, with a maximum value of $3,000, will be awarded to a person currently completing their junior year of college or university, scheduling for full-time study at a four- or five-year college or university in the next academic year, and pursuing a career goal of becoming a certified teacher of middle school mathematics. These scholarships are named in recognition of the generous contributions to mathematics education made by Edward Brennan.To apply for the scholarship, a written proposal must be submitted that includes evidence of the applicant’s past academic achievement in a college or university and the applicant’s commitment to pursue a teaching career in middle school mathematics. This scholarship can be applied to tuition, fees, course materials, and other expenses directly related to the recipient’s academic program of study. Any acquisition of equipment must support the applicant’s plan of study but not require more than 10 percent, or $300, of the entire scholarship.Applicants must submit a written proposal that identifies the remaining one or two years of collegiate coursework in mathematics or mathematics education required to earn certification; a detailed outline of the full-time study required to meet these requirements within two years of study, and the course titles and credits for mathematics and mathematics education courses already completed; and a budget to fund the plan. Applicants must be student members of NCTM.No person(s) may receive more than one award administered by the Mathematics Education Trust in the same academic year. Past recipients of the Edward Brennan Scholarship and employees or immediate family members of employees of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.
Prospective Secondary Teacher Course Work Scholarships
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to college students preparing for teaching secondary school mathematics. One scholarship, with a maximum value of $10,000, will be awarded to a person currently completing their sophomore year of college, scheduling for full-time study at a four- or five-year college or university in the next academic year, and pursuing a career goal of becoming a certified teacher of secondary school mathematics. These scholarships are named in recognition of the outstanding contributions to mathematics education made by professors Frank Demana and Bert K. Waits of the Ohio State University.To apply for the scholarship, a written proposal must be submitted that includes evidence of the applicant’s past academic achievement in a college or university and the applicant’s commitment to pursue a teaching career in secondary school mathematics. This scholarship can be applied to tuition, fees, course materials, and other expenses directly related to the recipient’s academic program of study. Any acquisition of equipment must support the applicant’s plan of study but not require more than 10 percent, or $1,000, of the entire scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded in two phases, with $5,000 for the recipient’s third year of full-time study, and $5,000 for the recipient’s fourth year of full-time study.Applicants must submit a written proposal that identifies the remaining two or three years of collegiate coursework in mathematics or mathematics education required to earn certification; a detailed outline of the full-time study required to meet these requirements within three years of study, and the course titles and credits for mathematics and mathematics education courses already completed; and a budget to fund the plan. Applicants must be student members of NCTM.
Prospective Teacher NCTM Conference Attendance Awards
The purpose of this grant is to provide financial assistance to future teachers of mathematics for attendance at NCTM conferences. The Mathematics Education Trust will fund up to $1,200 (+ Conference Registration) for travel and subsistence expenses for full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are committed to teaching mathematics in grades PreK–12 to attend an NCTM annual meeting or a regional meeting of NCTM. Applicants must be current student members of NCTM. Entries will be judged on the following criteria: acceptable academic record and standing, expressed interest in and commitment to teaching mathematics, and anticipated benefits of conference attendance, and clarity of the proposal.Applicants at the undergraduate level must be currently enrolled in a state-approved certification program and be on at least the second semester of their Junior year with a GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better. Graduate students must be enrolled in a master’s level program leading to certification or one designed to strengthen the teaching and learning process. Individuals already certified must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program. Applicants must be committed to teaching grades PreK–12 and have a sincere interest in mathematics education. Any air-travel arrangements must be made through the designated NCTM travel agent so NCTM can directly pay for travel.No person(s) may receive more than one award administered by the Mathematics Education Trust in the same academic year. Past recipients of this grant are not eligible to reapply.
Connecticut Education Association Minority Scholarships
Selection Criteria: * Entering or enrolled in a four-year Connecticut college or university * U.S. citizen * Teaching major * Minority student * Academic excellence, 2.75 GPA * Financial need * Acceptance letter from college for high school graduate; letter from college professional program for college student.
NCCTM Graduate Scholarships
The NCCTM Trust Fund Committee semiannually accepts applications from NCCTM members who are elementary or secondary school teachers of mathematics and who are taking graduate courses in mathematics and/or mathematics education as part of a graduate program leading to a graduate degree. The Trust Fund Committee awards scholarships of $600 to as many qualified applicants as the available investment income from the Trust Fund will permit. Scholarship applications may be submitted during the year, but will be reviewed twice a year. The application deadline is October 1 and March 1 with grants made at that time.
Kathy McMahon Adams Scholarship
Amount: $1000 college scholarshipsDescription: The Kathy McMahon Adams Fund provides college scholarships to graduates of Ascension School in Oak Park, or parishioners of Ascension Church. Special consideration is given students considering the teaching profession.Eligibility: Open to graduates of Ascension School or Ascension Church parishioners.
