Science Scholarships

The NSHSS Foundation provides STEM scholarships for underrepresented groups in order to help reduce financial barriers for those with academic and leadership potential and the desire to pursue STEM careers. We recognize that in order to increase diversity in the technology workforce, we must increase diversity in undergraduates. The Foundation awards scholarships to applicants who are pursuing a degree in, or closely related to, one of the following STEM disciplines: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering Biosciences/Pre-med/health-related fields Chemical Engineering Chemistry Civil Engineering Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences Computer and Computational Sciences, including Statistics and Accounting Electrical Engineering Geosciences Information Sciences Materials Science and Engineering Mathematics Mechanical Engineering Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Nuclear Engineering Oceanography Operations Research Physics Teaching in STEM areas

The Cognizant Making the Future scholarship program recognizes today’s inspiration as tomorrow’s innovation. The goal of the scholarship program is to expand the pool of students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields who are encouraged “to be makers of things, not just consumers of things” as highlighted by President Obama at the National Academies of Science in 2009. Cognizant is committed to preparing the next generation with the skills they will need to be active participants in an environment that will become increasingly dominated by technology. This is a design-based scholarship and candidates will be required to submit documentation of a hands-on project that illustrates both creativity and innovation. The New York Hall of Science will serve as the Chair of the Selection Committee which will also include the Maker Education Collaborative, Cognizant and other organizations that support making initiatives. Criteria: Students are eligible to submit a project for consideration if they are:  Pursuing a career in a STEM field.  A citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States.  Eligible to enroll or currently enrolled at a two or four year accredited college or university with a full course of undergraduate study or a vocational-technical school.  A student in good academic standing with a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average. Amount: Award amounts are $5,000. The award will be payable to the institution earmarked for the account of the student. The award is non-transferable and the recipient may not receive cash. The Washington State Chapter of Women in Aviation, International offers a $1,500 scholarship for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in memory of Yukiko Howell. Yukiko taught math, science, and Japanese language for many years at Annie Wright School in Tacoma, Washington. After obtaining her private pilot certificate, Yukiko taught weekly aviation lessons at her school, including the basics of flying. She advocated aviation in her lessons, emphasizing math and science proficiency as a means to achieve an exciting aviation career. She used her own flight training and experience to motivate her students, and she enlisted the help of aviation colleagues to complement her own stories. Yukiko happily volunteered for the Washington State Chapter's scholarship committee and at local education and outreach events, along with volunteering at WAI conferences, Sally Ride Science Festivals, and on the Museum of Flight Women Fly planning committee. In addition to all WAI requirements the applicant shall be pursuing higher education toward a STEM career or continuing education STEM classes, be enrolled in an accredited institution (including two- and four-year colleges, technical institutes, and certificate programs), have experience volunteering in STEM or aviation-related events and/or WAI activities in the previous year, and submit an essay that includes detailed explanations of the applicant's career plans, goals, and volunteer experiences. The scholarship must be used within one year of receipt and will be paid directly to an accredited program/institution. Funds may be applied to tuition, books, or laboratory fees. Funds may not be used for housing, transportation, flight training, meals, or incidental expenses. STEM careers include, but are not limited to, science, engineering, air traffic controller, avionics technician, dispatch certification, aircraft mechanic, meteorologist, or educator for STEM. Applicants must be a member of Women in Aviation, International by November 1, 2014, and may apply for no more than two scholarships. Internships are not included in the two per member scholarship limit. All application materials can be submitted in the same envelope. These requirements are the minimum for all scholarships unless otherwise indicated. Some scholarships may require additional information, please read the description thoroughly to make sure you meet all requirements. For each scholarship include three stapled (no folders) complete application sets (one original and two copies) of the following information: Official WAI application form Two one-page recommendation letters (originals - no photocopies) Typed, descriptive 500-word essay Professional résumé Copies of all aviation and medical certificates and the last three pages of your pilot logbook (if applicable)

To honor the foresight of the Johnsons in establishing what is now the world’s premier field station for high-altitude biology, and to honor the historic link between RMBL and Western State College, this scholarship has the purpose of supporting undergraduate students taking summer classes at RMBL, including directed research classes, or otherwise conducting undergraduate research at RMBL. Preference is given to Western State Colorado University students. Award decisions will be based on financial need and academic merit. Please note: students receiving fellowship and scholarship funds are expected to maintain a B average in their courses. Performance will be reviewed mid-way through the summer and students not in compliance will be asked to leave the field station at their own expense.

An endowment fund established to honor Dr. Harriet Barclay, a long-time RMBL botanist and educator. Given annually to botany students. Award decisions will be based on financial need and academic merit. You will be able to complete a financial aid form when completing the Coursework Application. Please note: students receiving fellowship and scholarship funds are expected to maintain a B average in their courses. Performance will be reviewed mid-way through the summer and students not in compliance will be asked to leave the field station at their own expense.

An endowment fund established to honor the grandparents of Ward Watt. Given annually to coursework students. Award decisions will be based on financial need and academic merit. You will be able to complete a financial aid form when completing the Coursework Application. Please note: students receiving fellowship and scholarship funds are expected to maintain a B average in their courses. Performance will be reviewed mid-way through the summer and students not in compliance will be asked to leave the field station at their own expense.

An endowment established in honor of former RMBL Director Dr. Fran Hunter. Given annually to coursework students. Award decisions will be based on financial need and academic merit. You will be able to complete a financial aid form when completing the Coursework Application. Performance will be reviewed mid-way through the summer and students not in compliance will be asked to leave the field station at their own expense.

This fund was established by the friends and family of Keith as a memorial to him and his deep love of nature. The fund can also be used to help students who have spent time at the RMBL and want to return, either as a student, a research assistant, or as a first-year graduate student. There are two criteria for awarding the scholarship. First, it should be used to help students who, for whatever reason, might not otherwise be able to attend the RMBL. Second, it should be awarded to students for whom a summer at the RMBL will be particularly meaningful. Award decisions will be based on financial need and academic merit. An endowment established in honor of RMBL graduate student researcher Lee Snyder. This competitive award is given annually to graduate student researchers. Award decisions will be based on financial need and academic merit. You will be able to complete a financial aid form when completing the Coursework Application. This program targets students who wish to conduct a full-time independent research project in field biology. Applicants may be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, graduates of an undergraduate program, or may be early in their graduate career. Students conduct independent research under the supervision of RMBL scientists.
