Science Scholarships

GeneTex believes in accelerating scientific advancement and the notion that the genesis of future discoveries begins with the support of young scientists now. The GeneTex Scholarship Program will award a $2000 (USD) scholarship to students pursuing a STEM undergraduate or graduate degree. The scholarship will be awarded to one student twice a year.

The American Thyroid Association (ATA) is pleased to announce the availability of funds to support new investigator initiated research projects in the area of thyroid function and disease. Topics may include, but are not limited to, clinical thyroidology, thyroid autoimmunity, thyroid and the brain, thyroid hormone action and metabolism, and thyroid cell biology. Research awards are intended to assist new investigators in obtaining preliminary data for submission of a more substantial application (i.e., to the NIH). Research grants, up to $25,000 annually, will be awarded for two year terms based on receipt and review of a satisfactory progress report from funded investigators in the fourth quarter of the first year of funding.Guidelines for All Research Grant Proposals: As mentioned above, research awards are targeted for funding of new investigators to obtain preliminary data for submission of a more substantial application (i.e., to the NIH).Eligibility of Applicant and Use of Funds Guidelines:1. New investigators are individuals who are less than 6 years from completion of their post-doctoral fellowship and have never been a PI on an NIH RO1 or equivalent grant (recipients of NIH R29, R21 and KO8 awards are eligible).2. Faculty members (MD and PhD) are eligible.3. Postdoctoral fellows are eligible if their department provides written confirmation that at the time of the award the applicant will have a junior faculty position. Students working towards a PhD are not eligible.4. Investigators and individuals who have previously received ATA, ThyCa or THANC awards are not eligible. In general, investigators who have achieved the rank of associate professor or higher are not eligible.5. Applications are limited to one per individual researcher.6. The funds can be used for direct costs associated with the proposal, including technician’s salary, supplies or equipment but not for PI’s salary.7. Recipients of ATA grants should be ATA members or must apply to become ATA members. For new members, membership dues for the first year will be waived.

This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who attends a US university/college located Portland, Oregon. Applicants must meet general FEA scholarship eligibility requirements & preferences. Students interested in being considered for this annual scholarship should indicate this through their application forms. This scholarship is made possible by the generous support and fundraising efforts of international educators at PDX Abroad. PDX Abroad is a community of innovators advancing the field of education abroad through active engagement across institutional and organizational boundaries. Requirements: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S. Must be applying for a study abroad program eligible for credit at the student’s educational institution Must plan to study abroad for a minimum of 4 weeks in country Is committed to supporting education abroad in his/her campus community through work with the FEA and his/her campus education abroad staff upon return Preferences: Applying to a study abroad program known for its academic rigor and immersion elements Applying to a study abroad program that includes studying the language of the host country (if not English) Applying to a study abroad program with a sustainable service-learning or volunteering component Applying to a study abroad program in a non-traditional destination Demonstrates financial need FEA strongly encourages students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad Groups typically underrepresented in study abroad include, but are not limited to: Minorities First-generation college students STEM majors Community college students Students with disabilities

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA - Applicants MUST meet all of the following criteria: 1. Must have a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA). 2. Must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited four year college/university, or a full-time student at a two year college enrolled in a program leading to an academic degree. 3. Majoring in one of the following college disciplines at a accredited 4-year college or university: * Math * Medicine * Physical Science * Technology * Science * Engineering * Natural Resources 4. Must be a member of an American Indian tribe or otherwise considered to be an American Indian by the tribe with which affiliation is claimed; or is at least 1/4 American Indian blood; or is at least 1/4 Alaskan Native; or considered to be an Alaskan Native by an Alaskan Native group to which affiliation is claimed. 5. Funded by U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and provided to American Indian/Alaska Native candidates pursuing a bachelors degree in engineering or science, specifically related to water resources or an environmentally related discipline.

Scholars will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and must meet the following guidelines: * Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident and a resident of the State of Connecticut * Be in the senior year at a Connecticut high school at the time of application * Attend an accredited college or university within the State of Connecticut on a full-time basis * Be enrolled in an eligible academic program * Maintain a B average or 3.0 GPA throughout high school and college * Be in the top 20% of his or her graduating class and have scored at least 1000 combined in the Scholastic Aptitude Tests * Must work within the State of Connecticut for two years following graduation Service Obligation Following Graduation: Scholars must begin employment in the State of Connecticut within 12 months after receiving their associate's or bachelor's degrees. Automatic extensions for commencement of the employment requirement of up to four years will be granted for those who choose to immediately pursue an advanced degree in the fields of science and technology on a full-time basis. The Connecticut work requirement will be met if the Scholar meets at least one of the following within five years of graduation: * Is continuously employed with no breaks in service for 24 months * Completes a total of 3,900 hours of work during a period of time not less than two years nor more than five years immediately following completion of post-secondary education

Applicants must be a high school senior from one of the following locations entering a four-year undergraduate program intending to major in chemistry or chemical engineering: Lake Charles, Louisiana; Natrium or New Martinsville, West Virginia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Cleveland, Ohio; Shelby and Lexington, North Carolina; Oak Creek, Wisconsin; and Houston, Texas.

AFCEA DC awards multiple single-year standard scholarships in the amount of $4,000 each, and one single-year scholarship in the amount of $8,000 to Metro-area high school seniors in the Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland area. Second-year students in area community colleges who are entering a four-year college may apply for one-time scholarships of $2,000. Scholarship awards are provided to qualified students pursuing degrees in the C4I-related fields of engineering (electrical, computer, chemical, aerospace or systems); electronics; mathematics; computer science; physics; science education; mathematics education; technology management; or management information systems.

The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has been providing undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences for more than 80 years. By encouraging close working relationships between students and faculty, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning.The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.While membership in Sigma Xi is not a requirement for applying for funding from the Grants-in-Aid of Research program, approximately 75% of funds are restricted for use by dues paying student members of Sigma Xi or students whose project advisor is a dues paying member of Sigma Xi. Students from any country are eligible to receive funding. Application Deadlines: March 15 and October 15 annually.
