Physical Science Scholarships

Applicants must be students accepted or enrolled in an institute of higher learning. Applicants must seek a major, and declare intention to pursue a professional career, in engineering, mathematics, or physical or biological sciences.

The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible to apply. NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their graduate studies in science or engineering. Applicants must receive or be on track to receive their baccalaureate degrees by the upcoming Fall. Preference to applicants pursuing doctoral study and research in aeronautical and astronautical engineering, biosciences (including toxicology), chemical engineering, chemistry, cognitive, neural and behavioral sciences, computer science, electrical engineering, geosciences, materials science and engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture and ocean engineering, oceanography, and physics (includes optics). Recommended GPA is 3.0 and higher. Applications are encouraged from women, persons with disabilities and minorities, including ethnic minority groups such as American Indian, Black, Hispanic, Native Alaskan (Eskimo or Aleut) or Pacific Islander (Polynesian or Micronesian). NDSEG Fellows may choose as their fellowship institutions appropriate United States institutions of higher education offering advanced degrees in science or engineering. During part of their tenure, fellows may study or engage in research or field work away from their academic institutions if, in the judgment of the faculty, such arrangements further the fellow's education and contribute directly to the attainment of an advanced degree, and the fellow is officially enrolled and earning academic credit.

The selection process is designed to recruit all qualified candidates. Minorities and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be enrolled as college or university students (in their junior or senior years, or in any graduate or postgraduate level) in the natural, physical, health, engineering, or social sciences in order to apply. Students enrolled in English, journalism, science journalism, or other non-technical fields are not eligible for these fellowships. Successful applicants will attend an orientation at AAAS headquarters at the start of the summer and a wrap-up session at the end of the summer. They will prepare reports on the progress of their fellowship throughout the summer.

Designated for a graduate student in physics. Winners have traditionally been at the dissertation level of their graduate work. US citizens may use the money for study in the US or abroad. Non-US citizens must be enrolled in a US institution of higher education to be eligible for these awards. Restrictions are subject to change.

The contest is open to both undergraduate and graduate student entries. A first prize of $1,000 ($750 cash + $250 travel expenses), and a second prize of $500 ($250 cash + $250 travel expenses) will be awarded in each division. Both North American and international students are eligible for this contest; however, all applicants must be TMS student members. Students not currently holding memberships may enclose with their paper entry a completed membership application, with dues payment, to become eligible. Papers must not have been published prior to the deadline of May 1st. Only one paper contest entry per student is acceptable.

One $5,000 cash award scholarship will be made to an undergraduate student majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering or minerals processing/extraction programs. In addition, a travel stipend of up to $1000 is also available for the recipient to attend the TMS Annual Meeting, to formally receive the scholarship. The recipient of the TMS Presidential Scholarship will be chosen by a specially-appointed selection committee of the TMS Student Affairs Committee of TMS. The following criteria will be assessed by the Scholarship Selection Committee to select the recipients of this scholarship: - Scholarship Application - Academic Achievement - Activities in and out of school, including work experience - Leadership - Personal Profile Statement - Letters of Recommendation Both North American and international students are eligible for this scholarship; however, all applicants must be TMS student members. Students not currently holding memberships may enclose with their scholarship entry a completed membership application, with dues payment, to become eligible. Applicants must be enrolled full time in a metallurgical/materials science engineering program at a qualified college or university. Relatives of members of the TMS Student Affairs Committee or of the funding committee/ division are not eligible.

One $2,000 cash award is available to an undergraduate student studying subjects in relation to electronic, magnetic and/or photonic materials. The recipient of the TMS/EMPMD Gilbert Chin Scholarship will be chosen by a specially appointed selection committee of the TMS Student Affairs Committee. The scholarship recipient will be known as the EMPMD Gilbert Chin Scholar. A $2,000 stipend will be awarded to the recipient, preferably at the site of the 2000 TMS Annual Meeting. An additional $500 for travel expenses will be available to the recipient to attend the TMS Annual Meeting to accept the award. Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants in their junior or senior year, enrolled full time in a program that includes the study of electronic materials. The following criteria will be assessed by the Scholarship Selection Committee to select the recipients of this scholarship: - Scholarship Application - Academic Achievement - Activities in and out of school, including work experience - Leadership - Personal Profile Statement - Letters of Recommendation All applicants must be TMS student members. Two $2,500 scholarships are available to undergraduate students majoring in materials science and engineering or physical metallurgy. The recipients of the TMS/SMD Scholarship will be chosen by a specially-appointed selection committee of the TMS Student Affairs Committee. The scholarship recipient will be known as an SMD Scholar. A $2,500 stipend will be awarded to the recipients at the site of the TMS Annual Meeting. Additionally, the scholarship recipient will be given up to $500 for travel expenses to the TMS Annual Meeting to accept his/her award. Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants in their senior year, enrolled full time in an engineering program relating to the structure, property and processing of materials. The following criteria will be assessed by the Scholarship Selection Committee to select the recipients of this scholarship: - Scholarship Application - Academic Achievement - Activities in and out of school, including work experience - Leadership - Personal Profile Statement - Letters of Recommendation All applicants must be TMS student members. Applicant must be a college student preparing for a career in engineering, physical/life sciences, or other technical fields and enrolled in either an associate or bachelor's degree curriculum adapted to a cooperative work-study program that has a formal arrangement with the Air Force.

Open to United States citizens who are members of one or more of the following ethnic minority groups: Alaskan Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Native Americans, Black/African Americans, Mexican Americans/Chicanas/Chicanos, Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesian or Micronesian), and Puerto Ricans. Awards are made only for study in research-based doctoral programs (PhD or ScD) that lead to an academc career in teaching and research in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, and life sciences. Intended for students who are at or near the beginning of their doctoral study. GRE General Test scores are required from tests taken since October 1, 1993. Awards will not be made for work leading to degrees in practice-based disciplines. Persons who have already earned a doctiral degree are not eligible to apply.

Open to United States citizens who are members of one or more of the following ethnic minority groups: Alaskan Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Native Americans, Black/African Americans, Mexican Americans/Chicanas/Chicanos, Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesian or Micronesian), and Puerto Ricans. Dissertation Fellowship support is intended for the final year of dissertation writing. Applicants must have completed all requirements for their degree except for the writing of the dissertation including course work, examinations, language requirements, approval of the dissertation proposal/topic, and any other departmental and institutional requirements. Advisors must submit a valid Verification of Doctoral Degree Candidacy by February 14 to confirm that all such degree requirements have been met by that date. Awards not made for work leading to degrees in practice-based disciplines such as education, business, administration, management, health sciences, nursing, home economics, library science, speech pathology, audiology, personnel, guidance, social work, fine arts, or performing arts.

Open to United States citizens who are members of one or more of the following ethnic minority groups: Alaskan Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Native Americans, Black/African Americans, Mexican Americans/Chicanas/Chicanos, Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesian or Micronesian), and Puerto Ricans. Awards for postdoctoral research are made in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences and life sciences, education, and interdisciplinary programs composed of two or more eligible disciplines. Applicants may not have held their degree for more than seven years at time of application. Approximately 25 one-year felowships offered to scholars in an academic teaching and research career, or those planning such a career.
