Library Sciences Scholarships

LITA/Christian (Chris) Larew Memorial Scholarship in Library and Information Technology

The LITA/Christian (Chris) Larew Memorial Scholarship, begun in 1999, is awarded jointly on an annual basis currently in the amount of $3,000, by the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association, and Baker & Taylor. The scholarship is designed to encourage the entry of qualified persons into the library and information technology field, who plan to follow a career in that field, and who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a vision in pursuit of library and information technology. This scholarship is for study in an ALA Accredited Master of Library Science (MLS) program.Candidates should illustrate their qualifications for this scholarship with a statement indicating the nature of their library experience, letters of reference, and a personal statement of the applicant's view of what he or she can bring to the profession, emphasizing experiences that indicate a potential for leadership and commitment to library technology. Candidates must not have earned more than 12 hours towards a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA Accredited MLS program. Economic need is considered when all other criteria are equal.The winner is announced and introduced, if present, at the LITA President's Program during the Annual Conference of the American Library Association.

LITA/LSSI Minority Scholarship in Library and Information Technology

The LITA/LSSI Minority Scholarship, established in 1994, is awarded annually by the Library and Information Technology Association, a division of the American Library Association, and Library Systems and Services, Inc., in the amount of $2,500.00.The scholarship is designed to encourage the entry of qualified persons into the library and automation field who plan to follow a career in that field; who demonstrate potential in, and a strong commitment to the use of automated systems in libraries; and who are qualified members of a principal minority group (American Indian or Alaskan native, Asian or Pacific Islander, African-American, or Hispanic). The recipient must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen. This scholarship is for study in an ALA Accredited Master of Library Science (MLS) program.Candidates should illustrate their qualifications for this scholarship with a statement indicating the nature of library experience, by letters of reference, and by the personal statement of the applicant's view of what he or she can bring to the profession, emphasizing experiences which indicate a potential for leadership and commitment to library automation. ASCLA Century Scholarship

You must meet the following criteria to be eligible: * Acceptance to an ALA-accredited LIS Master’s or doctoral program. * Medical documentation of disability or disabilities, services, or accommodations and/or services the applicant needs to succeed in his/her studies. * U.S. or Canadian citizenship.There are no minimum semester hours requirements for a continuing student. Candidates will be considered for their academic excellence, financial needs, leadership, and professional goals. The winner will receive the scholarship during ASCLA President's Program at ALA’s Annual Conference.

The Bound to Stay Bound Books Scholarship

Provides financial assistance in the form of four $7,000 awards to students who intend to pursue an MLS or advanced degree and plan to work in the area of library service to children in any type of library. The scholarship is made possible through the generous contributions of Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc.

The Frederic G. Melcher Scholarship

Provides financial assistance in the form of $6,000 scholarships to two students who intend to pursue an MLS degree and who plan to work in children’s librarianship in any type of library.

Marshall Cavendish Scholarship

Eligibility: * U.S. or Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident. * Attend ALA accredited Master's Program. * No more than 12 semester hours towards MLS/MLIS/MIS prior to June 1 of year awarded. * Personal Statement.

Christopher Hoy/ERT Scholarship

Eligibility: * U.S. or Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident. * Attend ALA accredited Master's Program. * No more than 12 semester hours towards MLS/MLIS/MIS prior to June 1 of year awarded. * Personal Statement.

APALA Scholarship

The Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association Scholarship will provide financial assistance to a student of Asian or Pacific background who is enrolled, or has been accepted into a master's or doctoral degree program in library and/or information science at a library school accredited by the American Library Association (ALA).Eligibility Criteria for the Award * Applicant must be attending or admitted into a master's degree or doctoral program in library and/or information science at a library school accredited by ALA. * Applicant must be in library school by Fall. * Applicant may be either a full-time or part-time student. * Applicant must be of Asian/Pacific Islander heritage. * Applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U. S. or Canada. * Scholarship recipients may not receive more than one scholarship award. * Successful candidate must join, be an active member of APALA, and serve on the Scholarship Committee the following year.

Alice L. Haltom Educational Fund

Eligibility * Students who are citizens of U.S., Canada, or Mexico and actively pursuing an education for a career in information and records management. * The maximum award for students in an Associate degree program is $1,000. The maximum award for a Bachelors or Advanced Degree is $2,000.Application Guidelines * Applicants must submit a completed scholarship application form provided by the Trust Administration. * Three (3) letters of recommendation are required from employers, instructors, or individuals. * A copy of the most current, official school transcript must be provided.

E.J. Josey Scholarship Award

The E. J. Josey Scholarships are two (2) unrestricted grants of $2,000 awarded annually to African American students enrolled in or accepted by ALA accredited programs.Persons Wishing to Apply Must: Be an African American Citizen of the United States or Canada. Be enrolled or accepted by ALA-accredited graduate program leading to a degree in library and information science at the time of application.

Federal Librarians Cicely Phippen Marks Scholarship

The Federal Librarians Cicely Phippen Marks Scholarship is given to a library school student who has an interest in working in a Federal library. The student will receive a scholarship award of $1,500. Students who are currently enrolled in any ALA-accredited library school, who do not already have an ALA accredited degree, and who have expressed an interest in some aspect of Federal librarianship are eligible. Applicants must be full or part-time students at the time of application. Students nominate themselves for this award and a letter of reference from a Federal librarian, a library school professor, etc. may be emailed to the Awards Committee in support of an application. Applicants for Federal Librarians Cicely Phippen Marks Scholarships must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident; must attend an ALA accredited master's program; must not have completed more than 12 semester hours or one-third of the required semester hours towards MLS/MLIS/MIS prior to June 1 of the year awarded; and must submit a complete application. Factors considered in making these awards include: academic excellence; leadership; and evidence of commitment to a career in librarianship. Achievement in these areas may best be demonstrated by statements indicating the nature of library and other experience, by professional references, and by the personal statement included in the online application.

ALA Century Scholarship

An annual scholarship of $2,500 that funds services or accommodation for a library school student(s) with disabilities admitted to an ALA-accredited library school. The scholarship will fund services or accommodations that are either not provided by law or otherwise by the university that will enable the student or students to successfully complete the course of study for a Master’s in Library Science and become a library or information studies professional. Formerly administered by ASCLA. The Century Scholarship is currently being administered by the ALA HRDR office. Century Scholarship applicants must provide medical documentation of their disability or disabilities, services, or accommodations and/or services the applicant would need for their studies, demonstrate the need for financial assistance and be citizens of the United States or Canada. Documentation should identify the applicant's disability and how it affects his or her ability to complete a course of study. Any additional supporting documents are welcome. Documentation is only used to determine eligibility for the scholarship, and will remain confidential.
