Languages Scholarships

Competition is open to United States or Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are at the pre-doctoral stage or who have received the Ph.D. degree within the last five years.* Applicants may not be Members of the American School during the year of application. The fellowship may be held for a maximum of one year. Other major fellowships may not be held during the requested tenure of the Colburn award. * Current officers and members of the Governing Board of the Institute are not eligible for these awards.

A pre- or post-doctoral fellowship for study of archaeology and classical studies has been established by the Institute at the American Academy in Rome. This Fellowship, combined with other funds from the American Academy in Rome, will support a Rome Prize Fellowship which will be open to citizens or permanent residents of the United States.* * Current officers and members of the Governing Board of the Institute are not eligible for these awards.

The National Italian American Foundation has a $1,000,000 education budget. They will award scholarships to outstanding students in the spring for use during the following academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and divided between two groups of students. Category I: Italian American students who have outstanding potential and high academic achievements. Area of study: open. Category II: Those students form any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field who have outstanding potential, and high academic achievements. To be considered for a NIAF scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria: * Be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education for the upcoming fall semester; * Have a grade point average of at least 3.25 (or the equivalent); * Be a United States citizen or a permanent resident alien; * Fit into one of the two scholarship categories; * For the purposes of the NIAF Scholarship Program, to be Italian American the student must have at least one person in his/her ancestry who has immigrated form Italy. ** No immediate family members of the NIAF Board of Directors, Regional Vice-Presidents, Area Coordinators, or Staff are eligible for NIAF Scholarships.

Students who are enrolled in Latin or have completed a Latin course during the current academic year.

Candidates must be unmarried women between 25 and 35 years of age who have demonstrated their ability to carry on original research. They must hold the doctorate or have fulfilled all the requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation, and they must be planning to devote full-time work to research during the fellowship year that begins September 1. Eligibility is not restricted to members of Phi Beta Kappa. For the study of Greek language, literature, history, or archaeology.

This scholarship is for either three or six months (depending on which is available through the sponsoring district) of intensive langauge training and cultural immersion in another country at a study institution assigned by The Rotary Foundation Trustees. The three-month scholarship is most appropriate for studying a language in which the applicant may already be somewhat proficient. The six-month scholarship may be more appropriate for studying a language that presents a unique challenge to the applicant. Applications will be considered for candidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili and Swedish. In addition to meeting the general eligibility requirements, applicants are expected to have completed at least one year of college-level course work or its equivalent of the language they plan to study. Please note that the scholarship is not suitable for applicants who are already fluent in the proposed study language. General Eligibility Applicants must have completed at least two years of university or college course work or must have a secondary school education and have been employed in a recognized vocation for at least two years when the scholarship begins. All applicants must be citizens of a country in which there is a Rotary club. Members of Rotary clubs are eligible and encouraged to apply. The following persons are ineligible for any Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship: A Rotarian; and Honorary Rotarian; an employee of a club, district or other Rotary entity or of Rotary International a spouse, lineal descendant (child or grandchild by blood or legal adoption), a spouse of a lineal descendant, or an ancestor (parent or grandparent by blood) of any living person in the foregoing categories.

The awards are highly competitive. Any college senior who expects a degree or any college graduate who is a citizen or permanent resident in the United States may apply, as long as he or she is not and has not been enrolled in any graduate program leading to a Ph.D. degree. Applicants must be applying to a program leading to the Ph.D in a humanistic field. Eligible fields of study include: art history, classics, comparative literature, critical theory, cultural anthropology, cultural studies, English literature, ethnic studies, ethnomusicology, foreign language & literature, history, history & philosophy of mathematics, history & philosophy of science, humanities, interdisciplinary studies, cultural linguistics, music history & theory, philosophy, political philosophy, political theory, religion, rhetoric, women's studies. Minority candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. Previously unsuccessful fellowship candidates may reapply. The prime objective of the Mellon Fellowships is to identify and encourage persons who are committed to teaching and have a broad vision of learning. High grade-point averages and high GRE scores are important but not the only measures of the excellence sought. Outstanding future promise, as attested to by faculty members, will be considered critical. The statement of interest in the field will also be read with great care, and candidates will be will advised to spend the time necessary to explain in this document their intellectual interests, hopes, and plans for the future. A writing sample of no more than seven pages is required. THE AWARDS: Eighty-five entry-level, one-year, portable merit fellowships will be awarded in the competition. Students should note that fellowships are for the first year of a Ph.D. program only and should plan to seek support elsewhere for subsequent years. Graduate schools are aware of the situation and can be expected to consider university support in the second and following years for those Mellon Fellows who have done well. Winners of Mellon Fellowships may take their awards to any accredited graduate school of arts and sciences in the United States and Canada. Each candidate is expected to apply to graduate school, in accordance with normal procedures, for admission to a program leading not only to the M.A. but also to the Ph.D. degree. Payment of the stipend will be made in two installments, the first in September, the second in January. Mellon Fellows are expected to carry a full course load. They may not accept supplementary awards or teaching assistantships during the nine-month academic year of the fellowship.

To qualify for the Undergraduate Program, applicants must meet the following requirements: - Must be a senior in High School (at least 16 years of age) - Minimum SAT score of 1100 or minimum composite ACT score of 25 - Must major in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Languages, Mathematics, or Intelligence Analysis - High School GPA of 3.0 or higher - Demonstration of leadership abilities - Applicant must be U.S. citizen.
