Journalism Scholarships

Here are some of the Journalism scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.

The Don Shelby Journalism Scholarship

Awarded to a student interested specifically in a broadcast or electronic news career. Open to college/university students who have completed at least two years of school and majoring in electronic media are eligible. The grants will be used for tuition and fees. Scholarship is open to college/university students living or attending school in the five-state area served by the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa & western Wisconsin) For consideration scholarship applicants must: Submit completed online scholarship grant application form. Submit completed relevant essay. College scholarships require an additional Video Link (YouTube, Vimeo, etc) of your best work. Time Limit: 15 minutes. Submit a copy of your most recent college transcript. Letter or letters of recommendation from relevant faculty or advisors. Letters of recommendation can be accepted via email [email protected] , providing it comes directly from the faculty or advisor’s school account. Hard copy letters should be signed and printed on letterhead paper. Each scholarship requires the student to write a mandatory essay for the scholarships offered. Essays will be judged based on your ability to focus on the topic, answer the question and stay within the 450 word limit. We will also pay attention to spelling and grammar.

The Ed Piette Leadership Scholarship

For students who have demonstrated leadership skills in their school or community and who are planning to seek careers in broadcasting or electronic media. Open to college/university students who have completed at least two years of school and majoring in electronic media are eligible. The grants will be used for tuition and fees. Scholarships are open to college/university students living or attending school in the five-state area served by the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. tpt Public Media Scholarship

The tpt Public Media Scholarship will be awarded to an individual who aspires to a career in Media, with an eye toward non-profit Public Media and public service. This is a time of dramatic change in Public Media, as it transitions from traditional Public TV and Radio to a world of integrated technologies and tremendous opportunities. Open to college/university students who have completed at least two years of school and majoring in electronic media are eligible. The grants will be used for tuition and fees. Scholarship is open to college/university students living or attending school in the five-state area served by the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Joseph A. Sowa Scholarship

 Minimum GPA 3.0  Major in field of communications  Demonstrate financial need  Submit two letters of recommendation from teacher, counselor, employer or community organization demonstrating the students moral & ethical traits are in alignment with Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s, including self-discipline, scholarship and extracurricular involvement  Submit an essay describing your plan to maximize the potential of young people through communication as well as demonstrate the possession of leadership potential in the community  Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Applications are open to the general public. However, it is the policy of the Pauahi Foundation to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.

Joseph Näwahï Scholarship

GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY  Minimum GPA 3.2  Graduate student at an accredited institution in the state of Hawai`i  Pursuing Hawaiian studies, Hawaiian politics, Law (specific to Hawaiian legal issues), or Communications/Journalism (specific to Hawaiian history, culture and politics)  Demonstrate financial need  Submit two letters of recommendation; one from a teacher or counselor and one from a community organization who can comment on your overall character, achievement and contribution to serve the greater community  Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Applications are open to the general public. However, it is the policy of the Pauahi Foundation to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.

Bill and Grace Calder Scholarship

An endowment fund established by the Bill and Grace Calder Trust. Given annually to a female student majoring in English or journalism who wishes to take RMBL summer courses to increase her background in and exposure to science. Award decisions will be based on financial need and academic merit. You will be able to complete a financial aid form when completing the Coursework Application. Please note: students receiving fellowship and scholarship funds are expected to maintain a B average in their courses. Performance will be reviewed mid-way through the summer and students not in compliance will be asked to leave the field station at their own expense.

RTDNA Presidents Scholarship

Two awards are given each year in honor of former RTDNA Presidents Theodore Koop, Bruce Dennis, James McCulla, John Salisbury, Bruce Palmer, Dick Cheverton, Jim Byron, Ben Chatfield and John Hogan. The recipients of the Presidents Scholarship will each receive $1,000 and an invitation to the Excellence in Journalism conference. WHO CAN APPLY Students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors at the time the scholarship is awarded, pursuing careers in radio, television, or digital journalism Winners must be officially enrolled, full-time sophomores or above in good standing when scholarships are awarded Students may apply for only one RTDNF scholarship, and past RTDNF scholarship winners are not eligible. ATG Artistic Scholarship

To provide financial assistance and promotion of Asian American college students pursuing a major in the performing, visual arts, journalism and/or mass communications. Awards: $1,000 to be applied toward school tuition and fees General Eligibility Requirements: Must be of at least 50% Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity Must be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the U.S Must be either a high school senior or a college student currently enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. vocational, junior college, or four-year college/university and must be a full-time, degree seeking student by the upcoming academic calendar year and pursuing a major in the visual/performing arts (film, theatre, fashion, photography, graphic design, dance, music, journalism, mass communications, etc.) Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted) Family members of Board members are ineligible Selection Criteria: Selection is based on a rating system judged in five major categories. The candidate with the highest combined cumulative points will receive the scholarship. These categories are: Quality of content submission (essay, artistic portfolio) Academic performance Leadership/community service experience and contribution Letters of recommendation Phone/in-person committee interview Please note that those Scholarship Winners will be invited to attend our annual charity event, Fashion for a Passion held in Fall in Dallas, Texas. Fashion for a Passion is our biggest event of the year which helps to raise money for our charitable causes as well as for the current scholarship. The presence of scholarship winners is highly encouraged. Funds will be disbursed directly to the educational institution in the student’s name.

CIC/Anna Chennault Scholarship

PURPOSE To encourage students to pursue journalism as a career. To induce competitors to research, learn and give an opinion on a topical news item and to take a stand on this particular issue. ELIGIBILITY Applicants must be committed to AAJA’s mission. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior that has been accepted to a U.S. college (proof of acceptance required) or a currently enrolled college student. AAJA membership is not required for the application but if selected, the student must sign up for student membership. SELECTION CRITERIA Candidates will be judged on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated journalistic ability, commitment to the field of journalism and/or sensitivity to Asian American and Pacific Islander Issues. BENEFITS $5,000 will go towards the student’s college education. The selected student will receive travel, lodging and registration to attend AAJA’s national annual convention. Depending on the winner’s area of study, the student will also be paired with a professional print, online or broadcast mentor at the convention to help them network. Please be sure to gather all the required materials before beginning the application. You will be required to submit the following: One copy of an official high school or college transcript Two letters of recommendation from a professional who is familiar with your academic and/or journalism work (a counselor, professor, etc.). Work samples (in PDF, JPG or link formats). You will also have to answer ONE of three essay questions.

Mary Quon Moy Ing Memorial Scholarship

AAJA will award up to $2,000 to a currently enrolled college student or graduating high school senior who is pursuing journalism as a career. Eligibility and Rules: 1. Applicants must be committed to AAJA’s mission. 2. Applicants must demonstrate journalistic excellence, a strong interest in pursing journalism as a career, and a commitment to community involvement. 3. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior, undergraduate, or graduate student enrolled full time with at least 12 credit units each semester for the fall and spring. Applicants must be currently taking or planning to take journalism courses and/or pursing journalism as a career. Selection Criteria: Candidates will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated journalistic ability, financial need, commitment to the field of journalism and/or sensitivity to Asian American/Pacific Islander issues. AAJA student membership is encouraged for all applicants and required for the selected scholarship recipients. For membership, please apply online at www.aaja.org.

William Woo Print and Online News Internship Grant

The Print and Online News Internship Grant supports Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) pursuing journalism careers in print and online news, where AAPIs continue to be underrepresented. We encourage all college students who have secured a summer internship to apply for the grant to help defray living costs. The William Woo Internship Fund will award one student $1,000. Eligibility and Rules: 1. Applicants must be committed to AAJA’s mission. 2. Applicants must have a serious interest in pursuing journalism as a career in the print or online field. 3. Applicants must be a full-time college student or recent college graduate. 4. Applicants must have already secured a summer internship at a print or online news outlet/company before applying for this internship grant. 5. AAJA membership is not required to apply, but is strongly encouraged. Student membership will be required for the selected candidate. This stipend is to be used toward living expenses/transportation during the internship. The selected candidate will sign a waiver acknowledging this.

Broadcast News Internship Grant

Apply to the Broadcast News Internship Grants for a chance to be awarded up to $1,000 toward your summer internship expenses. These two AAJA Broadcast News Grants support Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) pursuing journalism careers in broadcasting, an industry where AAPIs continue to be underrepresented. Eligibility and Rules: 1. Applicants must be full-time college students or recent college graduates. 2. Applicants must have secured a summer internship before applying for the internship grant. The stipend is to be used toward living expenses and/or transportation during your internship. Accepted applicants will be required to sign a waver acknowledging this. 3. AAJA student membership is strongly encouraged for all applicants, but not required to apply. Those selected to receive grants will be required to sign up for AAJA student membership. The selected awardees will also be assigned a professional journalist mentor through the AAJA Broadcast Mentor Program.
