Here are some of the Journalism scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.
The Russ Ewing Excellence in Journalism Awards and Scholarship
Scholarships are open to outstanding college and university students pursuing careers in journalism.
This annual fundraiser includes a media awards competition and scholarship presentation. CABJ presents awards for outstanding coverage of African Americans and issues of special concern to the African American community.
Mid-Florida Society of Pro. Journalists Scholarship
A $1,000 grant awarded annually to a minority undergraduate student majoring in journalism or who intends to pursue a career in journalism. Applicants must be Florida residents, show need and high academic standing.
Joel Garcia Memorial Scholarship
The Joel Garcia Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually to qualified Latino students who are planning to pursue a career in journalism. The scholarships, which range from $500 to $2,000 per student, are based on several criteria including commitment to the field of journalism, scholastic achievement, community awareness and financial need. Students must be enrolled full-time for the entire academic year, and must be a California resident or attend an accredited college or university in California. Open to graduate students.
Ken Innouye Scholarship
The Ken Inouye Scholarship is for members of ethnic minorities. 1. You must provide proof that you are enrolled or have been accepted as a journalism major at a four-year college. (If your college does not have a journalism program, you must supply a letter from a member in good standing of the Society of Professional Journalists in your geographic area, verifying that you intend to pursue a career as a professional journalist and that you show strong potential as a journalist.) Students in fields such as advertising, public relations, publicity or law are not eligible. Students completing pre-journalism programs must provide proof that they have been admitted to a journalism program. 2. You must have completed at least your sophomore year in college, and you must have at least one semester to complete in a journalism program after the awards of the scholarship. Graduate students in journalism programs are eligible. 3. You must be a resident of Los Angeles, Ventura or Orange counties or be enrolled at a university in one of those three California counties. 4. If you have received a chapter scholarship and continue to meet the eligibility requirements, you may apply to have the scholarship renewed. Renewal requests are considered along with all other scholarships applications and are given no preference. 5. You may apply for more than one scholarship, but no more than one scholarship will be awarded to any applicant. The application form allows you to check off all scholarships for which you are applying on a single page. Do not file separate application forms for each scholarship. Multiple applications will be discarded. 6. Awards are made primarily on the basis of accomplishments and potential. Financial need will be considered in making selections between otherwise equally qualified applicants.
National Newspaper Publishers Association Grants
NNPA provides information and helps administer grants for minority college students who want to pursue a career in journalism. Several grants valued at $2,000 each awarded annually.
Kyutaro & Yasuo Abiko Memorial Scholarship
National JACL membership is a requirement to be considered for a JACL scholarship. Membership must be held by the applicant or applicant's parents only. Extended family ties do not apply for this requirement. Student memberships are available. For more information about membership categories, please contact the JACL Membership Department at National Headquarters. Applicants must also be planning to attend a college, university, trade school, business school or any institution of higher learning at the undergraduate school level in the upcoming fall. Preference for this award will be given to student with an interest in journalism or agriculture.
William C. Rogers Scholarship
Established in 1981, this scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in the news-editorial sequence at the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. The recipient is selected from nominations made by the University of Georgia.
Multicultural Scholarship
Applicants must meet the following requirements: 1. Be registered as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited four-year college or university; 2. Have attained at least junior status by the time the scholarship will be used--Summer or Fall and have at least one full term remaining by the time the scholarship will be awarded; 3. Earned and maintained a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 point scale in all courses. If you are not on a 4.0 grading scale, please explain and document. 4. Membership in the Public Relations Student Society of America is preferred, but is not a requirement. A major or minor in public relations is also preferred. A student who attends a school that does not offer a public relations degree or program must be enrolled in a communications degree program (e.g., journalism or mass communications). 5. Previous award winners are not eligible. 6. Must be of African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Native American, Alaskan Native, or Pacific Islander ancestry.
NYPA Internships
The NYPA Foundation provides paid summer internships for college journalism students. Students must apply by March 1st of each year, and be accepted into the eight week program. Students should apply directly to the local community newspaper they wish to intern with, and be interviewed and accepted by an NYPA member newspaper. Students who are accepted into the program will earn a net stipend of $2,500 for the eight week internship.
Johnson F. Hammond, MD, Memorial Schp Fund
The American Medical Association Foundation is pleased to request nominations for the Johnson F. Hammond, MD Memorial Scholarship. Dr. Hammond was an Editor and Editor Emeritus for the Journal of the American Medical Association and this scholarship s funded by a bequest from his wife, who wished to encourage medical students to enter careers in medical journalism in honor of his memory. An annual scholarship of $3,000 will be awarded to a medical student of high moral character and outstanding academic achievement with a demonstrated interest and involvement in medical journalism. The scholarship recipient will be selected from among nominees proposed by the deans of AMA approved medical schools, with financial need not being a consideration. Each school may propose one student.
