Geology Scholarships

he ASDSO Scholarship Program, established in 1992, awards annual undergraduate scholarships to U.S. citizens enrolled in accredited programs in engineering or related fields and planning careers related to the design, construction, or operation of dams. Scholarships have ranged from $5,000 to $10,000 in recent years. Successful recipients must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time at the senior level during the following year's academic term in an accredited civil engineering program, or in a related field as determined by ASDSO, and must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in hydraulics, hydrology or geotechnical disciplines, or in another discipline related to the design, construction and operation of dams. Minimum Criteria Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 for the first three years of college and be recommended by their academic advisor. Basis for Award The basis for selection will generally follow these guidelines: Academic Scholarship Financial Need Work Experience/Activities Essay Announcement of successful candidates will be made in July of each year.

The American Society For Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Scholarship is dedicated to encourage students to pursue education in the areas of geospatial science or technology associated with remote sensing, photogrammetry, surveying and mapping. The applicant is required to be enrolled or anticipating to enroll in a United States university or institution in the field of geospatical science, surveying and mapping, or a related field. The applicant is required to submit with the application a list of all relevant courses taken, a statement of work experience including technical papers, special projects, internships, and courses taught that may reflect the student’s abilities in the field.Academic Disciplines/Professional Aspirations: Engineering/Technology; Surveying; Surveying Technology, Geographical Information Science, or Cartography.Award: This scholarship is for use during freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior years. This scholarship is not renewable. Number: The number of scholarships awarded is 1. Amount: The amount of the scholarship awarded is $1,000.Requirements for Eligibility: The applicant is required to be enrolled or anticipating to enroll at a four-year college or university. This scholarship is accessible only to citizens of the United States.Requirements for Application: Application, essay composition, school transcript, resume, and personal references. Purpose * The purpose of the Award is to encourage and commend college/university graduate students or post-doctoral researchers who display exceptional interest, desire, ability, and aptitude in the field of remote sensing or other related geospatial information technologies, and who have a special interest in developing practical uses of these technologies.Eligibility * The Award is made to a graduate student (Masters or Ph.D. level) currently enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university in the United States or Canada, or a recently graduated (within three years of graduation) post-doctoral researcher, who is pursuing a program of study aimed at starting a professional career where expertise is required in remote sensing or other related geospatial information technologies.Award * The award consists of a certificate and a check in the amount of $5,000 and a one-year student or associate membership (new or renewal) in ASPRS. * The award is presented by the ASPRS Foundation from funds donated by students, associates, colleagues, and friends of Robert Colwell, one of the world's most respected leaders in remote sensing, a field that he stewarded from the interpretation of World War II aerial photographs to the advanced acquisition and analysis of many types of geospatial data from military and civilian satellite programs.ApplicationA current or beginning graduate student or post-doctoral researcher who wishes to be considered for the award must submit an application that includes the following items: * A listing of courses taken, and/or those to be taken, in remote sensing or other related geospatial information technologies, recognizing that instruction in remote sensing is often embedded in courses taught in many different disciplines. * An official transcript of all college/university level courses completed and grades received to demonstrate scholastic ability. * A listing of internships, special projects or work experience; technical papers, research reports or other documents; courses taught as a lecturer or teaching assistant; and presentations made that may support the applicant’s capabilities in this field. * Three letters of recommendation from faculty members or professionals having knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities (demonstrated or potential). * A statement, not to exceed 2 pages, detailing the applicant’s educational and/or research goals that relate to the advancement of remote sensing or other related geospatial information technologies and the applications of these technologies for mapping, monitoring and/or assessing land (including coastal) resources and helping solve land resource planning or management issues. (Note: Dr. Colwell’s research focused mostly on developing and demonstrating practical uses of remote sensing.)Award Selection * The Selection Committee evaluates each applicant, applying equal weight to each of the five items listed above. The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the Committee, has the highest overall ranking is designated as the winner.

Purpose * The purpose of the award is to facilitate graduate-level studies and career goals adjudged to address new and innovative uses of signal processing, image processing techniques, and the application of photogrammetry to real-world techniques within the earth imaging industry. This award is presented by a grant from the ASPRS Foundation on behalf of corporate contributions to the Foundation by Intergraph, a technology company that provides innovative solutions to the earth imaging industry.Eligibility * The award is restricted to members of ASPRS. It is intended for a student who is currently pursuing graduate-level studies or who plans to enroll for graduate studies in a recognized college or university in the United States or elsewhere.Award * The award consists of a one-year Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 and a certificate.ApplicationIn addition to the application form, and official transcripts, applicants must submit the following items: * A 2-page statement detailing applicant’s educational and career plans for continuing studies in photogrammetric applications. * Two completed letters of reference from faculty members who have knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities. * Technical papers, research reports, or other pertinent items produced by the applicant and indicating capabilities in this field may be submitted with the application, but are not required.Award Selection * The Intergraph Scholarship selection committee will evaluate each application and apply equal weight to each of the items listed above. The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated as the recipient.

Purpose * The purpose of the award is to encourage upper-division undergraduate and graduate-level college students to pursue a course of study in surveying and photogrammetry leading to a career in the geospatial mapping profession.Eligibility * Students currently enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university in the United States or Canada, who are pursing a program of study in surveying or photogrammetry leading to a career in the geospatial mapping profession.Award * The award consists of a certificate and a check in the amount of $3,000 and a one-year student or associate membership (new or renewal) in ASPRS. * This award is presented by ASPRS, MAPPS (the Management Association of Private Photogrammetric Surveyors) and ACSM (the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping) through the ASPRS Foundation from funds donated by students, associates, colleagues, and friends of Frank Moffitt as a memorial to his lifetime contributions to the photogrammetric surveying profession.ApplicationAn upper-division undergraduate or graduate-level student who wishes to be considered for the award must submit an application that includes the following items: * A listing of courses taken, and/or those to be taken, in surveying and photogrammetry and other related geospatial information technologies, recognizing that instruction in remote sensing is often embedded in courses taught in many different disciplines. * A transcript of all college/university level courses completed and grades received to demonstrate scholastic ability. * A listing of internships, special projects or work experience; technical papers, research reports or other documents; courses taught as a lecturer or teaching assistant; and presentations made that may support the applicant’s capabilities in this field. * Two letters of recommendation from faculty members or professionals having knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities (demonstrated or potential). * A statement, not to exceed 2 pages, detailing the applicant’s educational and/or research goals that relate to the advancement of surveying and photogrammetry and other related geospatial information technologies and the applications of these technologies. Purpose * The purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and commend college students who display exceptional interest, desire, ability, and aptitude to enter the profession of surveying, mapping, photogrammetry, or geospatial information and technology. In addition, the Scholarship recognizes students who excel at an aspect of the profession that Ken Osborn demonstrated so very well, that of communications and collaboration.Eligibility * The Scholarship is made to an under-graduate student currently enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university in the United States, who is pursuing a program of study in preparation for entering the profession in the general area of surveying, mapping, photogrammetry, or geospatial information and technology.Award * This annual Scholarship consists of a certificate and a check in the amount of $2,000 and a one year student membership (new or renewal) in the Society. * This award is presented by the ASPRS Foundation, with funding provided by donations from friends and colleagues of Kenneth Osborn as a tribute to him.ApplicationA student who wishes to be considered for the Award must submit an application that includes the following items: * A listing of courses taken in surveying, mapping, photogrammetry, and geospatial information and technology and the academic grades received. * An official transcript of all college or university level courses completed and grades received to demonstrate scholastic ability. * Two letters of recommendation from faculty members or professionals having knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities (demonstrated or potential) as a professional in this field. * Papers, research reports, or other items produced by the applicant that may support the capabilities in this field. * A statement of work experience that may include internships, other forms of work experience, or special projects that demonstrate excellence in these fields and in communications and collaboration. Purpose * The purpose of the Award is to encourage and commend college students who display exceptional interest, desire, ability, and aptitude to enter the profession of teaching Surveying, Mapping, or Photogrammetry.Eligibility * The Award is made to a graduate student member of ASPRS currently enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university in the United States, who is pursuing a program of study in preparation for entering the teaching profession in the general area of Surveying, Mapping, or Photogrammetry.Award * The award consists of a certificate and a check in the amount of $3,000. * This Award is administered by the ASPRS Foundation from funds donated by the friends and colleagues of Paul R. Wolf as a memorial to him. Recognized nationally and internationally, Paul was an outstanding educator and practitioner of Surveying, Mapping, and Photogrammetry and a great friend of the Society. As author, teacher, and mentor, Paul made significant educational and academic contributions to these fields.ApplicationApplications must include the following items: * A listing of courses taken in Surveying, Mapping, and Photogrammetry and the academic grades received. * An official transcript of all college or university level courses completed and grades received to demonstrate scholastic ability. * Two letters of recommendation from faculty members having knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities (demonstrated or potential) as an educator in this field. * Papers, research reports, or other items produced by the applicant that may support the capabilities in this field. * A statement of teaching experience that may include teaching assistantships, seminars, and formal course teaching. The statement should include the nature, location and date(s) of the experience. * A statement, not to exceed 2 pages detailing the applicant’s plans for continuing studies towards becoming an education professional in Surveying, Mapping, or Photogrammetry.Award SelectionThe Committee evaluates each application, applying equal weight to each of the items listed above. The Nebraska Academy of Sciences is accepting applications for a new collegiate scholarship in memory of C. Bertrand and Marian Othmer Schultz. This scholarship will be awarded each fall to a Junior or Senior enrolled in an accredited college or university in the state of Nebraska. The applicant must have a declared major in a natural science discipline (chemistry, physics, biology, geology) and be anticipating a career in a science related industry, science teaching or scientific research.The scholarship offered is $3000, potentially renewable for one year if the recipient is a Junior. Application due date is February 1 and the scholarship will be paid out in two installments, ½ during each semester of the following academic year. Scholarship applications will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. Scholarship renewals will also be reviewed on a case by case basis. Scholarship recipients must show progress toward their career goals and the scholarship is not automatically renewed.

Mr. Witt was a member of the Marshfield High School class of1953. He is now retired after a career as Professor of Chemistryat Winona State University.Eligibility: A graduating senior of Marshfield High School enrolling in a state-supported institution and planning to major in the natural sciences (includes chemistry, physics, geology, astronomy, and biology.) Financial need is a consideration.

Purpose * The purpose of the award is to encourage those who have an exceptional interest in pursuing scientific research or education in geospatial science or technology or land information systems/records to enter a professional field where they can use the knowledge of this discipline to excel in their profession.Eligibility * The Scholarship is made to an under-graduate student currently enrolled or intending to enroll in a college or university in the United States for the purpose of pursuing a program of study that prepares him/her to enter a profession in which education in geospatial science or land information disciplines will advance the value of those disciplines within that profession.Award * The award consists of a certificate and a check in the amount of $1,000 and a one year student membership (new or renewal) in the Society. * Funds from the ILI have been donated to the ASPRS Foundation to support the John O. Behrens ILI memorial Scholarship in recognition of Mr. Behrens' outstanding contributions over the many years of his distinguished careerApplicationA student or prospective student who wishes to be considered for the award must submit an application form and the following items: * A listing of courses taken in land information, data management and geospatial information and technology and the academic grades received. * A transcript of all college or university level courses completed and grades received to demonstrate scholastic ability. If the applicant is a prospective enrollee in a college or university program, prior high school and post high school transcripts are required. * Two letters of recommendation from faculty members or professionals having knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities (demonstrated or potential) as a professional in a field that uses land information. * Papers, research reports, or other items produced by the applicant that may support the capabilities in this field. * A statement of work experience that may include internships, other forms of work experience, or special projects that demonstrates excellence in geospatial science, technology, land information systems/records research, and/or in communications and collaboration. The statement should include the nature, location and date(s) of the experience. * A statement, not to exceed 2 pages, detailing the applicant’s plans for continuing studies towards becoming a professional in a field that uses land and/or geospatial information as a key part of its performance.Award Selection * The Committee evaluates each application, applying equal weight to each of the items listed above. In an effort to help further the advancement of the geospatial tradecraft, USGIF is dedicated to assist promising students interested in the geospatial sciences with scholarship awards. Graduating high school seniors, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students can apply. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on their academic and professional excellence in a field related to the geospatial intelligence tradecraft. Students interested in using capabilities of geospatial science, data and technologies to address human security challenges are encouraged to submit their applications. USGIF hopes to inspire students who are interested in all that GEOINT has to offer to invest their futures in this incredibly exciting and relevant field of study. The USGIF Scholarship Program has awarded $792,000 in scholarships since launching the program in 2004. The Scholarship Program is partially funded by the annual Allder Golf Classic. Named in honor of the late William R. Allder Jr., the Allder Golf Classic raises money for the USGIF Scholarship Program.

The scholarship is open to high school juniors and seniors in California. To be eligible, a student must first have entered a regional or county science fair with a project related to any of the marine sciences -- geology, biology, meteorology, chemistry, etc. -- or to marine technology. (For information about entering their local science fair, students should talk with their science teachers or department heads.) In addition, the student must have applied to (and must be the following fall have enrolled in) a college or university in California.
