Environmental Science Scholarships

The grant is in support of research projects in hydrology and water resources by Ph.D. candidates in institutions of higher education and is awarded annually. Its objective is to foster graduate student research leading to the completion of doctoral dissertations. Appropriate topics may be in hydrology (including its physical, chemical, or biological aspects) or in water resources policy sciences (including economics, systems analysis, sociology and law).

The Foundation expects to award 75 to 80 Truman Scholarships on the basis of merit to junior-level students at four-year colleges and universities who: - Have extensive records of public and community service; - Are committed to careers in government or elsewhere in public service, and; - Have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills. In addition, up to three residents of Puerto Rico and the Islands with senior-level academic standing will be selected. Scholars are eligible to receive $3,000 for the senior year of undergraduate education and $27,000 for graduate studies. Scholars in master's degree programs planning to receive degrees in one or two years are eligible to receive $13,500 per year. Scholars in law programs are eligible to receive $13,500 at the start of the third year's second semester if they provide evidence that they will enter public service upon graduation or upon completion of any judicial clerkships after graduation. Scholars in graduate programs requiring three or more years of academic study are eligible to receive $9,000 per year for a maximum of three years. Scholars may attend graduate or professional schools in the United States or in foreign countries. One state scholarship will be available to a qualified resident nominee in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and, considered as a single entity, the Islands: Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. (Residency is generally determined by home address for school registration, family's primary residence, and voter registration.) The Foundation will select up to 35 at-large Scholars. Each nominee must be: - A full-time junior-level student at a four-year institution pursuing a bachelor's degree during the upcoming academic year. Junior here means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree or a student in his or third year of collegiate study who expects to graduate during the upcoming academic year, - Enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education, - Committed to a career in public service as defined above, - In the upper quarter of his or her class, and - A United States citizen or a United States national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Resident aliens (green card holders) are not eligible. Selection Procedures: A committee examines all nominations and selects about 200 Finalists to be interviewed for Truman Scholarships. Finalists are selected on the basis of: - extent and quality of community service and government involvement; - leadership record; - academic performance and writing and analytical skills, and; - suitability of the nominees's proposed program of study for a career in public service. Priority is given to candidates proposing to enroll in graduate and professional programs specifically oriented to careers in public service. These include law programs and master's and doctorate programs in public administration, public policy analysis, public health, international relations, government, economics, social services delivery, education and human resource development, and conservation and environmental protection.

Awarded to college students pursuing academic programs in the following: Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, Toxicology, Environmental Economics, Chemical Engineering, Hydrology, Biochemistry, Entomology, and related environmental disciplines. The awards are $4,000 for college Junior, Senior and Graduate students enrolled full-time at an accredited institution. Students must reapply each year as awards are not renewable. Requirements: 1. Applicant must major in one of the disciplines listed above. 2. Applicant must be a full-time Junior or Senior (12 hours/semester or quarter) or graduate (9 hours/semester or quarter) student, with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Awarded to members of AISES who are American Indian/Alaskan Native college students. Students must be pursuing academic programs in the sciences, engineering, natural resources. The awards are $1,000 and $2,000 for undergraduates and graduates, respectively. Requirements: 1. Applicant must be a student member of AISES. 2. Applicant must be at least 1/4 American Indian/Alaskan Native and/or recognized as a member by a tribe. 3. Applicant must major in one of the disciplines listed above. 4. Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate (12 hours/semester or quarter) or graduate (9 hour/semester or quarter) student at an accredited four year college/university of full-time student at a two-year college enrolled in a program leading to an academic degree. 5. Must have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, minimum.

Citizenship: Participants selected for support under the ONR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program must be citizens of the United States. Security Clearance: Participants must be eligible for a Department of Defense security clearance of Secret. In most cases, participants will be permitted to do research pending completion of the security clearance. All appointments are contingent upon Fellows obtaining the appropriate level of security clearance. Education and Experience: Before appointment, participants must present evidence of having received the Ph.D., Sc.D., or other earned doctoral degree recognized in U.S. academic circles as equivalent to the Ph.D. within seven years of the date of application, or must present acceptable evidence of having completed all formal academic requirements for one of these degrees. Prior Fellowships: A person who has received a prior postdoctoral fellowship at a navy laboratory under any program may not be eligible to participate in the ONR Postdoctoral Program at the same laboratory. Philip D. Reed award is designed to increase access to careers in the burgeoning area among African American, Latino and American Indian students. Undergraduate students may apply during the second semester sophomore year. Applicants must have a minimum of 3.0/4.0 grade point average and a demonstrated interest in environmental engineering. All applicants must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

The international training program in conservation science at Hawk Mountain provides hands-on learning and field experience for individuals committed to a career in natural-resource conservation. Trainees at Hawk Mountain... Live on-site for 4 months Learn basic techniques in conservation science and education Experience monitoring and environmental education in a wildlife sanctuary Learn how to work with volunteers, visitors and school groups Learn how to apply for grants and fund their own research projects Work on both an independent and a group project Practice nature interpretation at the Sanctuary Practice the latest methods in migration monitoring techniques Use satellite telemetry, banding, and GIS mapping Develop multicultural awareness and international partnerships Hawk Mountain trains up to 14 exceptional individuals per year. Trainees are selected from Pennsylvania, the United States and abroad. Most are selected more than one year in advance and are approved by Director of Conservation Science Dr. Keith Bildstein.

Each summer, Maryland Sea Grant’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports fifteen students to conduct marine research on the Chesapeake Bay. It’s a special opportunity to develop your research skills and interests by working with top scientists to study one of America’s most significant coastal resources. The REU program, funded by the National Science Foundation, is designed for students majoring in marine science, ecology, environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, and mathematics. During the 12-week program, each student works with a mentor on an individual research project at one of the two marine labs at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences located on the Chesapeake Bay. Research areas include: Estuarine processes Benthic environment Physical oceanography Contaminants Fisheries Molecular biology and genetics Environmental chemistry Submerged aquatic vegetation Modeling and analysis Coastal observing systems Each REU fellow will receive: A stipend of $6,000 Housing costs Round-trip travel expenses Eligibility Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have completed at least two years of study towards (but not yet completed) a bachelor’s degree. Preference is given to students who are rising seniors. Students from underrepresented groups and institutions with limited research opportunities are especially encouraged to apply.

Students enrolled in degree-granting institutions at either the graduate or undergraduate level are eligible. The award, which is given by Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in affiliation with Carl Zeiss Optics, Inc., is granted on the basis of the project's potential to improve our understanding of raptor biology and, thereby, our ability to protect these birds.

The Senior Student Recognition Program recognizes graduating four year college seniors planning a career related to dairy (production agriculture, manufacturing, marketing, agricultural law, business, communications, veterinary medicine, research and environmental sciences) who have demonstrated leadership skills, academic ability, and interest in dairy cattle. ONLY two applicants per college or university are accepted for this contest in any given year. Two letters of recommendation are required from the department chair or faculty members who are familiar with the applicant’s activities and academic achievements. The total number of awards will be determined by the number and quality of applicants.

The top 25 All-American contestants in the past three National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contests plus the Platinum winners in the past three National Dairy Challenge Contests are eligible to apply for up to two $3,000 scholarships for post graduate study in a dairy related field. Students may apply for the scholarship in their junior or senior year of college. The awards are base on rank in the national contests, academic standing, leadership ability, student activities, future plans and experience with dairy cattle. These scholarships are to be used for advanced study related to the dairy industry (production agriculture, manufacturing, marketing, agricultural law, business, veterinary medicine and environmental sciences) at the school of their choice. The winner will be recognized at the National Dairy Shrine Awards Banquet. The scholarship will be paid in two installments. The winner must submit an official transcript following their first year of graduate study to the Executive Director to receive the final payment.

To qualify, students must be nominated by a faculty member. These nominees must be either college juniors or seniors and majoring in one of the following engineering fields: mechanical, nuclear, or welding. College transcripts and a statement detailing course of study, accomplishments, professional affiliations and goals, and financial need must accompany nominations.
