Communications Scholarships
Here are some of the Communications scholarships on our site for which you may qualify.
Kenneth Sloat Langley Memorial Scriptwriting Scholarship
Up to $2,000 for undergraduate students
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Scholarship applicants:
• must be actively engaged in a collegiate-level curriculum in one or more areas of the television industry and be attending a college in Northern California (Visalia to the Oregon border), Hawaii, or Reno, Nevada;
• have completed at least one undergraduate academic year of television studies,
• have at least one remaining year of undergraduate study for the undergraduate scholarships. Entrants may receive only one scholarship per year. Scholarship recipients are not eligible for a second scholarship in the year following their award.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Please specify which scholarship competition you are entering. Undergraduate students may apply for more than one scholarship, but you must submit a separate application form. The video entry must be specific to the category for which you are applying.
Each application must include:
1) a completed scholarship application form;
2) a copy of your college transcript indicating your GPA and class standing (PDF);
3) a one-page essay summarizing your television academic and work experience, related activities and personal goals (Word or PDF);
4) a letter of recommendation from your dean or professor at your school explaining why you are a good candidate for an award plus the names of two faculty members we can contact for more information about your work. (Word or PDF)
VIDEO REQUIREMENTS
Undergraduate:
Writing - Submit up to three video samples of your work accompanied by scripts. (20 minutes maximum)
Miss Nancy Besst Graduate Memorial Scholarship
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Scholarship applicants:

• be enrolled in a television graduate program;
• have at least one remaining year of graduate study for the graduate scholarship.
Each application must include:

Joseph A. Sowa Scholarship
Minimum GPA 3.0
Major in field of communications
Demonstrate financial need
Submit two letters of recommendation from teacher, counselor, employer or community organization demonstrating the students moral & ethical traits are in alignment with Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s, including self-discipline, scholarship and extracurricular involvement
Submit an essay describing your plan to maximize the potential of young people through communication as well as demonstrate the possession of leadership potential in the community

Applications are open to the general public. However, it is the policy of the Pauahi Foundation to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.
Joseph Näwahï Scholarship
GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY
Minimum GPA 3.2
Graduate student at an accredited institution in the state of Hawai`i
Pursuing Hawaiian studies, Hawaiian politics, Law (specific to Hawaiian legal issues), or Communications/Journalism (specific to Hawaiian history, culture and politics)
Demonstrate financial need
Submit two letters of recommendation; one from a teacher or counselor and one from a community organization who can comment on your overall character, achievement and contribution to serve the greater community

FFTA Scholarship
Since 1982, the Foundation of Flexographic Technical Association (FFTA) has been providing financial aid to students who demonstrate an interest in the fields of flexography and/or graphic communications. These scholarships are highly coveted and are available only to a select number of students.

RTDNA Presidents Scholarship
Two awards are given each year in honor of former RTDNA Presidents Theodore Koop, Bruce Dennis, James McCulla, John Salisbury, Bruce Palmer, Dick Cheverton, Jim Byron, Ben Chatfield and John Hogan.
The recipients of the Presidents Scholarship will each receive $1,000 and an invitation to the Excellence in Journalism conference.
WHO CAN APPLY
Students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors at the time the scholarship is awarded, pursuing careers in radio, television, or digital journalism
Winners must be officially enrolled, full-time sophomores or above in good standing when scholarships are awarded
Students may apply for only one RTDNF scholarship, and past RTDNF scholarship winners are not eligible.

ATG Artistic Scholarship
To provide financial assistance and promotion of Asian American college students pursuing a major in the performing, visual arts, journalism and/or mass communications.
Awards: $1,000 to be applied toward school tuition and fees
General Eligibility Requirements:
Must be of at least 50% Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity
Must be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the U.S
Must be either a high school senior or a college student currently enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. vocational, junior college, or four-year college/university and must be a full-time, degree seeking student by the upcoming academic calendar year and pursuing a major in the visual/performing arts (film, theatre, fashion, photography, graphic design, dance, music, journalism, mass communications, etc.)
Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities
Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted)
Family members of Board members are ineligible
Selection Criteria: Selection is based on a rating system judged in five major categories. The candidate with the highest combined cumulative points will receive the scholarship. These categories are:
Quality of content submission (essay, artistic portfolio)
Academic performance
Leadership/community service experience and contribution
Letters of recommendation
Phone/in-person committee interview
Please note that those Scholarship Winners will be invited to attend our annual charity event, Fashion for a Passion held in Fall in Dallas, Texas. Fashion for a Passion is our biggest event of the year which helps to raise money for our charitable causes as well as for the current scholarship. The presence of scholarship winners is highly encouraged. Funds will be disbursed directly to the educational institution in the student’s name.
CIC/Anna Chennault Scholarship
PURPOSE
To encourage students to pursue journalism as a career.
To induce competitors to research, learn and give an opinion on a topical news item and to take a stand on this particular issue.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be committed to AAJA’s mission.
Applicants must be a graduating high school senior that has been accepted to a U.S. college (proof of acceptance required) or a currently enrolled college student.
AAJA membership is not required for the application but if selected, the student must sign up for student membership.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be judged on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated journalistic ability, commitment to the field of journalism and/or sensitivity to Asian American and Pacific Islander Issues.
BENEFITS
$5,000 will go towards the student’s college education.
The selected student will receive travel, lodging and registration to attend AAJA’s national annual convention.
Depending on the winner’s area of study, the student will also be paired with a professional print, online or broadcast mentor at the convention to help them network.
Please be sure to gather all the required materials before beginning the application. You will be required to submit the following:
One copy of an official high school or college transcript
Two letters of recommendation from a professional who is familiar with your academic and/or journalism work (a counselor, professor, etc.).

You will also have to answer ONE of three essay questions.
Mary Quon Moy Ing Memorial Scholarship
AAJA will award up to $2,000 to a currently enrolled college student or graduating high school senior who is pursuing journalism as a career.
Eligibility and Rules:
1. Applicants must be committed to AAJA’s mission.
2. Applicants must demonstrate journalistic excellence, a strong interest in pursing journalism as a career, and a commitment to community involvement.
3. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior, undergraduate, or graduate student enrolled full time with at least 12 credit units each semester for the fall and spring. Applicants must be currently taking or planning to take journalism courses and/or pursing journalism as a career.
Selection Criteria:
Candidates will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated journalistic ability, financial need, commitment to the field of journalism and/or sensitivity to Asian American/Pacific Islander issues. AAJA student membership is encouraged for all applicants and required for the selected scholarship recipients. For membership, please apply online at www.aaja.org.
